Avg FPS is the mean of each card's per-game average across 50 titles at 4K, from PlanMyPC benchmarks and community reports. "Worst game" is the slowest title measured — the honest floor behind the average. Price is the linked card's listed price, the middle of that GPU's in-stock listings; FPS/$ = average FPS divided by that price; higher is better.
How much GPU do you need for 4K gaming?
4K is 4x the pixels of 1080p and 2.25x 1440p, and unlike the lower tiers it has almost no CPU headroom left to trade away — a card that falls short here cannot be rescued by a faster processor, only by upscaling or lower settings.
Of the 16 cards we rank at 4K, 14 average at least 60 FPS across all 50 games, and 2 average at least 120 FPS — the bar for a high-refresh 4K monitor. The averages hide real spread: even the fastest card in the list drops to 42 FPS in its slowest title, which is why the table carries a worst-game column next to the mean.
A cross-game average answers "which card should I buy". It does not answer "will it run the one game I care about" — for that, use the per-game pages below, which show every card's measured FPS in a single title at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K.
