Best GPU for Hogwarts Legacy in 2026 — Benchmarked & Ranked
Last updated: October 2, 2026 · 17 GPUs tested
Short answer
For 1440p Ultra in Hogwarts Legacy, buy an RTX 5070 or an RX 9070. For 1080p Ultra, an RTX 5060 Ti 16GB is enough. For native 4K Ultra, or for 1440p with ray tracing on, step up to an RTX 5080. Our table below is a raster baseline — Ultra preset, native resolution, ray tracing off, no upscaling — and in it the RTX 5070 averages 97 FPS at 1440p, while the older RTX 4070, RX 6800 XT and RX 7800 XT cluster at 85–88 FPS. Ray tracing is what actually decides your tier: RT reflections are the game's most expensive setting, they roughly halve frame rates, and they push VRAM past 8 GB at 1440p, which is why every card named above ships 12 GB or 16 GB. DLSS or FSR Quality buys back about one GPU tier at any resolution.

Full Benchmark Results — Hogwarts Legacy at 1440p
Every figure in the table is an average frame rate at the game's Ultra preset, at native resolution, with ray tracing off and no upscaling or frame generation. Read them as a floor rather than a ceiling: turning on DLSS or FSR Quality typically buys back about one GPU tier. Results merge PlanMyPC benchmark runs with community-submitted FPS reports, deduplicated so each GPU appears once per resolution, which is why some cards carry a price and FPS-per-dollar figure and others do not. Two cards we recommend above are deliberately absent: we hold no Hogwarts Legacy runs for the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB or the RX 9070, so those two are placements by class against cards we did measure. Every number below is a measurement.
At 1440p Ultra the practical cutoff is the RTX 3070 at 66 FPS — everything above it in the table clears 60 comfortably. The RTX 3060 is the only card we measured that falls short, at 52 FPS; it is a 1080p card in this game, where it sits near 70 FPS. The middle of the stack is unusually tight: the RTX 4070, RX 6800 XT, and RX 7800 XT finish within 3 FPS of each other at 85–88 FPS, so price, VRAM, and power draw should decide that purchase rather than the benchmark. On a new build the RTX 5070 is the cheapest card in the table above 90 FPS (97), and the 16 GB RX 9070 is the AMD entry at the same tier. Pairing one with a 144Hz or 240Hz panel? Our 1440p high-refresh build guide carries the rest of the parts list, and every graphics card we track is priced there.
Native 4K Ultra thins the field sharply. Only the RTX 5090 (117 FPS), RTX 4090 (90), RTX 5080 (83), RX 7900 XTX (79), RTX 5070 Ti (77), and RX 7900 XT (68) stay above 60. The RTX 5070 lands at 57 FPS and the RX 7800 XT at 52, so 4K on those cards means DLSS or FSR Quality rather than native rendering. Generationally the RTX 5090 runs about 30% ahead of the RTX 4090 at both 1440p and 4K, and AMD's RX 7900 XTX slots between the RTX 5080 and RTX 5070 Ti — strong raster, weaker once ray tracing is switched on.
Ray tracing is three separate toggles here — reflections, shadows and ambient occlusion — and they are not equally priced. Reflections are the expensive one; shadows and AO cost noticeably less. Run all three at 1440p Ultra and frame rates roughly halve, so a card averaging 97 FPS native lands near 50. That makes upscaling effectively mandatory rather than optional in this game: DLSS Quality at 1440p renders internally at 960p and hands back close to a full GPU tier, FSR Quality does the same job on Radeon, and frame generation on RTX 40- and 50-series cards can push the result back over 100 FPS at a latency cost that matters far less in a third-person adventure than it would in a shooter. The practical recipe for a 12 GB card at 1440p is RT reflections on, RT shadows and AO off, DLSS or FSR Quality. If ray tracing is the reason you are shopping at all, Cyberpunk 2077 and Alan Wake 2 are the harder tests — a card that holds up in those two will not be the limit here.
VRAM is where 1440p ray tracing actually bites, and it is the one thing an average frame rate hides. Raster-only at Ultra, Hogwarts Legacy stays inside 8 GB at both 1080p and 1440p. Switch RT reflections on at 1440p Ultra and allocation climbs past 8 GB — and once a card is over budget the symptom is not a lower average, it is texture pop-in and hitching as assets are evicted and re-streamed. That is why the RTX 3070 is a worse 1440p ray-tracing card than its 66 FPS raster result suggests, and why an 8 GB card is not worth buying for this game today even at a discount. Plan on 12 GB for 1440p with ray tracing and 16 GB for 4K with ray tracing. It is also why the RTX 5060 Ti is only worth buying in its 16 GB form: the 8 GB version is the same GPU with the wrong amount of memory attached.
Two things the raw numbers still do not show. First, Hogsmeade remains the game's worst-case area, and the stutter there is asset streaming and CPU load rather than a GPU limit — a faster graphics card will not remove it. An NVMe SSD, 16 GB of system RAM, and a 6-core CPU from the Ryzen 5 5600 / i5-12400 generation or newer matter more for smoothness in that village than moving up a GPU tier. Second, averages flatter this game: the 1% lows during fast-travel loads and broom traversal sit well under the numbers in the table, which is another argument for capping frame rate just below your monitor's refresh rate rather than chasing the highest average you can afford.
